Joseph Levy Cohen (Dark Joseph Ravine): An Author Like No Other

There is something disarming about a writer who turns early doubt into a lifelong project. Joseph Levy Cohen, known to readers under the name Dark Joseph Ravine, built his path one page at a time, not because writing came easily to him, but because he refused to accept that it couldn’t.

What began as a personal challenge in high school has grown into a body of work shaped by humor, resilience, and a genuine desire to create something meaningful for younger readers. Since officially becoming a children’s book author in 2022, Dark Joseph Ravine has continued developing a literary universe where entertainment and important life lessons can coexist.

His latest release, “Watch Out! It’s Nolan!”, perfectly embodies that philosophy. Beneath its playful title and illustrated children’s-book format lies a much more serious subject: bullying at school, the fear it can create, and the importance of giving children the tools and confidence to speak up.

From criticism to creation

For Dark Joseph Ravine, becoming a writer was never something that seemed inevitable. In fact, it began with quite the opposite.

How did writing first find you?

Dark Joseph Ravine: “I was always told I was a bad writer, so I wanted to see if I could improve my writing capability.”

Rather than allowing those words to define him, Joseph decided to challenge them. Writing became a personal test: could he improve? Could he turn something people had criticized into something he could genuinely be proud of?

That determination eventually became a creative journey of its own.

Where did that journey really begin?

Dark Joseph Ravine: “In high school, after being told I was a bad writer numerous times.”

It’s an origin story that many creative people will recognize. Sometimes, the criticism that initially hurts can become the very thing that pushes someone to keep going.

For Dark Joseph Ravine, that classroom experience became the first step toward a much larger project.

Humor, vulnerability and Robert Munsch

When asked about the authors he feels connected to, Dark Joseph Ravine immediately points toward a writer whose work is known for its humor and ability to connect with younger audiences.

If you had to name a few authors you feel connected to, who would they be?

Dark Joseph Ravine: “One author that I feel most connected to is Robert Munsch, because we both enjoyed making funny stories to make people laugh. We also had depression and mental health problems throughout our entire lives.”

That answer reveals something important about Dark Joseph Ravine’s approach to storytelling.

For him, humor isn’t simply about making children laugh. It can also be a way of approaching difficult subjects, creating a sense of connection, and making complicated emotions easier to understand.

That balance between lighthearted storytelling and more serious themes is particularly evident in “Watch Out! It’s Nolan!”

A children’s book with a serious message

Dark Joseph Ravine officially became a children’s book author in November 2022, when he released Watch Out! It’s Nolan!

At its heart, the book follows a young boy dealing with bullying at school and the fear and anxiety that can accompany it. Rather than treating the subject purely as a dark or frightening experience, the story seeks to give young readers a character they can identify with while showing that there are ways to confront difficult situations.

As Dark Joseph Ravine explains:

“Watch Out! It’s Nolan!” was made to teach our young generation how powerful karma is, as well as kids learning to defend themselves from wrongful behavior.

The book therefore goes beyond simply telling a story. Its ambition is educational as well as entertaining: to encourage children to recognize bullying, understand that it is never acceptable, and find the courage to seek help.

One of the people who has recognized this dimension of the book is Mag. Albert Griesmayr, founder of Scribando Novelify, author of Book Marketing Secrets and a father of two children. He describes the book as a way for children to identify with Nolan as he confronts his fears and finds a way to return to school with greater confidence and happiness.

His perspective also highlights an important point: bullying isn’t something that children should be expected to solve entirely on their own. Adults, parents, teachers and schools all have a role to play in listening to children and taking their experiences seriously.

That idea is echoed by Katherine Bartlett, a 9th Grade Teacher and Children’s Author, who praised the book’s ability to address the consequences that can arise when adults fail to respond adequately to bullying.

Meanwhile, Casey Luft-Runner, a featured author on the Icebreakrs blog, book author and English Language Expert, describes Watch Out! It’s Nolan! as a heartwarming story about a young boy dealing with a common but deeply important problem, while highlighting the importance of reaching out to adults when help is needed.

Together, these reactions illustrate the broader purpose behind Nolan’s story: helping children understand that bullying is wrong while reminding them that they don’t have to face it alone.

Giving children a character they can recognize

One of the strengths of Watch Out! It’s Nolan! is its decision to approach bullying through the eyes of a child.

Rather than presenting the subject as a distant social issue, the book gives young readers a character whose fears, difficulties and attempts to overcome them can feel familiar.

That makes the message easier to access. Children who have experienced bullying may recognize elements of their own reality, while other young readers may gain a better understanding of what their classmates could be going through.

And for parents, teachers and other adults, the story can also serve as a starting point for conversations about kindness, courage, empathy and standing up against inappropriate behavior.

In that sense, Dark Joseph Ravine’s approach is relatively simple but powerful: take an important subject, make it accessible, and let a story do the talking.

From the page to television

The project has also found its way beyond the traditional world of children’s books.

Dark Joseph Ravine took part in an exclusive interview about Watch Out! It’s Nolan! with Dr. Jacalyn and award-winning author Diann Floyd Boehm on USA Global TV, alongside TV host Nikki Clarke, who also purchased the book.

The appearance gave Dark Joseph Ravine another opportunity to discuss the story and the ideas behind it, bringing Nolan’s message to an audience beyond the pages of the book.

It’s another sign that the project has managed to create conversations around its central themes rather than simply existing as another children’s title.

An award-winning chapter

The journey has also brought recognition.

Watch Out! It’s Nolan! recently won an award, adding another milestone to Dark Joseph Ravine’s career as a children’s author.

For an author whose literary journey began with people telling him that he wasn’t a good writer, that achievement carries an interesting sense of symmetry.

What started as a desire to prove to himself that he could improve has evolved into a published body of work, an award-winning children’s book and a project with an explicit mission: to encourage kindness, courage and awareness around bullying.

A story that goes beyond the book

From a high school classroom to a growing catalog of work for younger readers, Dark Joseph Ravine has turned early doubt into a distinctive creative voice.

His approach isn’t about pretending that difficult subjects don’t exist. Instead, he seems interested in finding ways to make them approachable, particularly for younger audiences.

With Watch Out! It’s Nolan!, that means using an accessible, illustrated story to talk about bullying, fear, courage and the importance of speaking up.

The book’s message is ultimately straightforward: bullying is never okay.

But perhaps that’s precisely why it matters. Sometimes the most important messages are the ones that children can understand, recognize and carry with them.

And for Dark Joseph Ravine, the journey that started with a simple question — could I become a better writer? — is clearly far from over.
